Here’s how it works

International Year One (UTP Stage II) is the equivalent of the first year of a University of Manitoba (UM) bachelor’s degree program. The program is offered as a pathway to seven faculties at UM. Students study on the University of Manitoba campus and have access to university facilities and student residences, plus supports and resources offered by both ICM and UM.

Upon successful completion of International Year One (UTP Stage II), if the student satisfies university admission requirements and deadlines and achieves the specified minimum GPA for admission, they’ll be eligible to apply for transfer and progress to the second year of their degree at the University of Manitoba. Admission to some degree programs will be on a competitive basis and subject to quotas. Meeting the minimum GPA does not guarantee admission.

Students who meet the International Year One (UTP Stage II) completion requirements but who do not meet the admissions requirements and competitive GPA of some degree programs will be eligible to apply to either the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Science, subject to UM’s admissions regulations.

Advantages of a pathway program

There are many advantages to choosing ICM as a pathway to the University of Manitoba. If your student doesn’t meet the English and/or academic requirements for direct entry to the University of Manitoba, ICM provides an accessible and supportive alternative. With smaller class sizes of approximately 30–35 students, students will also benefit from a more personalized learning environment, extended class hours to better understand course material, and regular access to instructors and advisors for guidance.

ICM also offers free supports to ease a student’s transition to university life, including workshops on time management, study techniques, and budgeting. Peer tutoring, mentorship, and academic advising are also available, along with specialized pre-arrival programming, Orientation and Month of Welcome activities, and study permit/immigration supports. Student Success Advisors also support students with adjusting to their new environment and their mental health and wellness.

Admission requirements

Entry into International Year One (UTP Stage II) generally requires the successful completion of Year 12 of high school with overall and individual subject requirements, depending on the program. Country-specific academic requirements are listed here. Prior to enrolment, students must also meet one of the English language requirements.
