Medical coverage
When you enrol at ICM, medical coverage through Manitoba Blue Cross is included in your fees. This insurance covers expenses related to new and emergent conditions, such as illness or injury, as part of the Manitoba International Student Health Plan (MISHP). Additionally, students are also covered by the StudentCare Plan which includes dental, vision, psychotherapy, chiropractic services, and more. These are the same insurance plans that are offered to University of Manitoba students.
Your coverage with Manitoba Blue Cross begins on the 1st of the month you commence studies or in other words, the 1st of the month you begin classes in your first term. New students will also have emergency coverage for the calendar month prior to the month your classes begin. For example, students starting in the Winter (January) intake will have their full coverage start January 1, with emergency coverage starting December 1. Note that “emergency” is defined as a sudden, unexpected, unforeseen occurrence of an acute illness or accidental injury requiring immediate medical treatment..
When you enrol at ICM, you will receive an email after the sixth week of classes with your Manitoba Blue Cross number and policy information. You will also receive an electronic policy card. This is important information to keep handy and in a safe place. Even if you don’t yet have your policy card, you will be able to claim any relevant expenses from the start date of your insurance policy once you receive your card.
If you arrive in Canada earlier than 30 days before your insurance start date, it is strongly recommended that you purchase emergency medical coverage on your own so you have insurance coverage from when you enter Canada until your Manitoba Blue Cross emergency coverage begins.
